The team consists of 12 players with significant experience in USA Basketball, featuring Phoenix Mercurys Diana Taurasi who is making her record breaking sixth consecutive appearance at the Olympics. Additionally, nine players on the team have already earned at least one Olympic gold medal.
In addition to Taurasi, the 2024 USA Women’s National Team includes Napheesa Collier (Minnesota Lynx), Kahleah Copper (Phoenix Mercury), Chelsea Gray (Las Vegas Aces), Brittney Griner (Phoenix Mercury), Sabrina Ionescu (New York Liberty), Jewell Loyd (Seattle Storm), Kelsey Plum (Las Vegas Aces), Breanna Stewart (New York Liberty), Alyssa Thomas (Connecticut Sun), A’ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces) and Jackie Young (Las Vegas Aces).
The group has a collective 15 Olympic gold medals, 18 FIBA Women’s World Cup titles, and 55 WNBA All-Star appearances. They also include eight WNBA champions, three WNBA MVPs, and five WNBA Rookies of the Year. This is only the second time in the history of the USA Basketball Women’s National Team program that every member of the Olympic Team has a gold medal from either the Olympics or the World Cup (2012).
Jennifer Rizzotti, chair of the USA Basketball Women’s National Team Committee, expressed her excitement in announcing the 2024 USA Women’s National Team. She believes that this team will represent the country at the highest level in Paris. The United States has an unparalleled depth in basketball, making the selection process challenging and competitive. The chosen athletes have shown an unmatched commitment to USA Basketball and their performance in Paris will be eagerly anticipated.
Taurasi, who is a five-time Olympian, has played more games than any other women’s player in USA Basketball Olympic history (38) and is second in points scored (414), trailing only Lisa Leslie (488).
After a successful 6-0 performance and a gold medal win at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Collier, Gray, Griner, Loyd, Stewart, Taurasi, and Wilson will all be returning for the 2024 squad. During the 2020 Olympics, Wilson and Griner were the top scorers for the team with 16.5 points per game while Stewart led the team in rebounds with an average of 10.0 per game and also contributed 15.0 points per game.
Griner, Stewart, and Taurasi were also part of the 2016 Olympic Games winning team in Rio de Janeiro. Plum and Young, who were members of the USA 3×3 Women’s National Team, also won gold in Tokyo with a record of 8-1, becoming the first team to ever win this event at the Olympics. Additionally, Copper, Gray, Ionescu, Loyd, Plum, Stewart, Thomas, and Wilson were all part of the 2022 USA Women’s National Team, which won its 11th World Cup gold medal in Sydney, securing a spot for the USA in the 2024 Paris Games.
The USA Basketball Womens National Team Committee handpicked and the USA Basketball Board of Directors approved the team. The committee consisting of Dawn Staley (University of South Carolina) Bethany Donaphin (WNBA), and Dan Padover (Atlanta Dream), along with athlete representatives Seimone Augustus and DeLisha Milton Jones also includes Rizzotti.
Cheryl Reeve (Minnesota Lynx), the head coach of the USA Womens National Team, will be joined by Kara Lawson (Duke University) Joni Taylor (Texas A&M University), and Mike Thibault (Washington Mystics) as her assistants. The coaching staff, who successfully guided the USA to a gold medal at the 2022 FIBA Womens World Cup, was selected by the USA Basketball Womens National Team Committee.
Curt Miller (Los Angeles Sparks) and Tanisha Wright (Atlanta Dream) will also support the team as scouts. Both Miller and Wright have previously served as court coaches for the USA Womens National Team training camps, and Miller was an assistant coach at the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournament and for the teams college exhibition victories last fall.
Reeve, the leader of the team expressed enthusiasm for the talented basketball players on the roster and their goal of winning an eighth consecutive olympic gold medal in paris. The team will convene in phoenix to begin their journey. In Paris, USA Basketball will be represented by four teams: 5-on-5 men and women and 3×3 men and women. The USA is the reigning Olympic champion in 5-on-5 men and women and 3×3 women while the 3×3 mens team will make its debut this summer.
According to USA Basketball chairperson Martin Dempsey, the announcement of the final national team marks the beginning of the countrys pursuit of four Olympic gold medals, a historic achievement as the first nation to qualify four basketball teams for the Games.
Dempsey expressed excitement in supporting all four teams, particularly the USA Womens national team as they aim for an unprecedented eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal. These 32 Olympic basketball athletes are exceptional representatives of our country and ddempsey looks forward to cheering them on.
Before competing in the WNBA All-Star Game on Saturday, July 20 at 8:30 p.m. ET (ABC), the USA womens team will hold a training camp in Phoenix. The USA women are aiming for their tenth overall and eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal. In group play, they will face Japan on July 29 (3:00 p.m. ET), Belgium on Aug. 1 (3:00 p.m. ET), and Germany on Aug. 4 (11:15 a.m. ET). The U.S. has an impressive 29-2 record against their Group C opponents. This is the second time the USA has been grouped with Japan in the Olympics and the first time they will play against Belgium and Germany.
